Untitled 01

2006 – Present

This series seems to initially make the biggest impression when people come across my work. It is these works that will garner a response of “Oh you do dirty pictures.” I realized that viewers quickly relate to the provocative images because they are ubiquitous in contemporary media, whether advertising, music videos, movies, fashion, print or on the street, both in the West and in Asia. This juxtaposition is actually my own realization that the Entertainment Soldiers that we grew up with in China, were the equivalent today’s starlets, models and popular cultural icons. Although the PLA’s Entertainment Soldiers were allegedly wholesome and Cherubic like, their high kicks, tight costumes and exposed skin were not an accident. Sex has always been used to sell an idea, even communism or going to war.
